Earth: Art of a Changing World
Created 3rd Dec 2009
Earth: Art of a Changing World reflects the impact of the climate change debate on the practice of a broad range of contemporary artists. The exhibition features work that embraces the 'issue' and 'art' whilst also being beautiful, powerful and thought-provoking. 'Onward', the piece in the Burlington Arcade, takes as its starting point our desire to understand the complexities of the natural world. A series of lights in the form of a tessellated polyhedral becomes increasingly complex as it progresses from Piccadilly and transforms the environment of Burlington Arcade by casting patterns of pulsating light, and explores energy consumption, scientific discovery and replication.
Earth: Art of a Changing World runs from 3rd December 2009 until 31st January 2010 at the Royal Academy of Arts, please see their website for more information.

Christmas Lights
Created 20th Nov 2009
The Duchess of Cornwall delighted crowds as she arrived at Burlington Arcade to turn on the Christmas lights last night (Thursday 19th November).
This year the Burlington Arcade and Royal Academy of Arts have come together in partnership for the first time, to create a light-based installation by UVA entitled 'Onward'. This piece will provide an introduction to the GSK Contemporary, 'Earth: Art of a Changing World' exhibition.
Addressing guests Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, President of the Royal Academy, commented "I am delighted that this year the Royal Academy and the Burlington Arcade have come together in partnership. They both have extensive histories - as many will know, this was Britain's very first shopping Arcade, opening in 1819 to great acclaim and now recognized as a historic and architectural masterpiece. This can also be said of Burlington House. With its grand Palladian facade, it has been the home of the Royal Academy since 1867. It is wonderful to see two 19th century institutions moving into the 21st century with this ambitious project".
Her Royal Highness took to the stage at 7pm and switched on the lights, heralded by a triumphal fanfare from the Household Cavalry. Her appearance was in support of the Ebony Horse Club, of which she is a Patron. The charity aims to improve the life skills of disadvantaged young people.
